Which plan actually fits my home?
Quick one first — one floor or two? And does the wifi drop anywhere already?
Two floors. My office is upstairs and calls drop.
Ah — that’s a coverage problem, not a speed one. Good news: you don’t need more gigs.

Home comes with up to two extenders on Wi-Fi 7, and that’s what actually reaches an upstairs office. I’ve highlighted it for you — worth a look at its Broadband Facts before you pick.

Scoping out designs for an ambiguous project to guide the team

To respect Google Fiber’s confidentiality and aid comprehension, every visual here is my own recreation. It reflects my design contributions and thought process, not the actual shipped product.

01  —  Background

Buying internet isn’t buying a sweater.

Google Fiber sells three plans. You buy one about once every few years, the answer changes by street address, the price has to be disclosed on a federal label, and the thing you bought arrives as a crew at your door. There is no return button.

Five properties that make this flow different from the catalogue commerce most shopping agents were designed for.

02  —  The problem

People were already using AI to buy this. Just not ours.

In interviews, shoppers were opening a general assistant in another tab mid-purchase — to compare us against what they already had, and to work out which plan fit their house. Two questions came up over and over.

“Is this actually better than the AT&T I’m on now?”Comparison
“I have no idea which one I need. Just tell me.”Fit

Three starter prompts, one per real question — borderless pills sitting on the input, so the first message stops costing anything.

03  —  The fork

Two patterns on the table.

Engineering confirmed full agentic handling was possible. Product wanted the agent to advance the purchase as far as it could. Legal saw liability. The open question was whether the agent’s actions should be mirrored on the page behind the panel — so you could follow along on either surface and switch freely.

05  —  The reframe

The question was never how much. It was which part.

“How autonomous should it be” has no answer — it’s a dial, and everyone puts the knob somewhere different. So I split the purchase into steps and asked which ones the agent owns. The bottom row is what settled it.

06  —  The answer

The agent points. It doesn’t pick.

It reframes the question — not “do I need 3 Gig” but “where does the wifi drop” — then rings the plan it recommends and says why. The user’s own radio is untouched, and the primary button still reads Continue with Core.

07  —  The component

What goes on the card that carries the link?

A deeplink hands you the page instead of operating it for you. The card has exactly one job: make the click predictable. Enough scent to know what’s on the other side, and not one element more.

a — a bare link

Home gives you the second extender, which is what fixes the upstairs office.

Previews the whole destination — so people decide here, away from the label.

08  —  The mistake I fixed

My own fix broke the conversation.

A deeplink is a navigation. In my first prototype, following the agent’s own link landed you on the plans page with the conversation gone — so the reasoning disappeared at the exact moment you needed it to decide.

App-scoped — the navigation becomes an event inside the thread

The fix wasn’t a “back to chat” button. The panel became app-level rather than page-scoped, and the navigation now appears in the transcript as an event — the conversation narrates its own movement.

09  —  The one place it acts

Propose, don’t book.

One sentence carries two constraints no form on the site asks for. Three lookups sit behind one reply. It returns two options, never one — and then it holds rather than books. A hold lapses on its own, which is exactly why this is the one action the agent is allowed to take.

Left: the constraint solve, with a soft hold instead of a booking. Right: the install scheduling page the hold lands on, with the panel offering to narrow the calendar down.

Always reachable. It speaks up twice.

Ask AI sits top-right on every page — always reachable, never shouting. It opens itself in exactly two places: the plans page, where both top questions fire, and after checkout, where the only job left is scheduling.

11  —  Three tradeoffs

What I gave up, and why.

01

Speed, for a legible page

Browser-use saved about one click at a time. Deeplinking costs the user that click back — and buys a page where the price, the plan and the federal label are all rendered at once.

02

Preview, for the label

The richest deeplink card was the one I wanted first. It previewed so much of the destination that people decided inside the card — away from the surface the disclosure lives on.

03

Capability, for permission

Engineering could have built the agent that completes the order. I scoped it down to find and compare, plus a reversible hold. The scoping is the design work.

12  —  The kit

Five components. One number I’d defend.

These travelled past the project because none of them is about broadband. They’re about an agent that recommends inside a flow with a real disclosure and a real truck.

My estimate from the interviews, not instrumented telemetry. It sizes the leak this agent exists to close — and in testing, almost nobody left.

Removing friction isn’t just about moving people forward faster.

It’s not taking steps they’d have to undo.
