Redesigning a coffee ordering app to create a seamless checkout experience that saves customers time and reduces in-store wait times.

OVERVIEW

The Problem

The app was supposed to save time.

Instead, customers preferred waiting 20 minutes in line at the café over using it.

20 minutes > the app

This pointed to an opportunity to improve the existing UX.

The Strategy

I studied how customers ordered their coffee in-person to emulate their happy moments better in the app, conducted a contextual inquiry to figure out where users tripped up in the current flow, conducted a competitive analysis of other coffee shop apps, and triangulated my learnings into a set of design improvements for Coupa Cafe's mobile app.

The Outcome

100,000+ users order through the flows I redesigned.

Meant to be a class project, Coupa Café's founder discovered this project online, implemented my recommendations into the live app, and awarded our team a prize.

And this project is now shown to all CS 147L students as the standard to aim for.
